Trimming Audio on Mobile

Smartphones are increasingly used for recording and editing — interviews, voice memos, podcast rough cuts. But mobile audio editing apps often require subscriptions or have confusing interfaces. Here are the best free options.

On iPhone (iOS)

Voice Memos (built-in): Apple's Voice Memos app lets you trim recordings made within the app. Tap the three-dot menu on a recording, select Edit Recording, and drag the yellow handles. Simple, but limited to Voice Memos recordings only.

iCloud Files / Files App: For general audio files, the iOS Files app offers no trimming. You'll need an app or browser tool.

TRIMR in Safari: Open Safari, go to trimr.net, tap the upload area, and select your audio file from Files. The Web Audio API works in iOS Safari. Drag the handles, preview, and export. The file downloads to your Downloads folder.

On Android

Native Recorder apps: Most Android phones include a Voice Recorder with basic trim functionality — usually accessed from the three-dot menu in the recording library. Good for recordings made on that device; limited format support.

TRIMR in Chrome: Chrome on Android has full Web Audio API support. Visit trimr.net, tap the upload area, pick your file, and trim. Works with MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A, and more. Exports download to your phone's Downloads folder.

Mobile Waveform Tips

  • Use landscape orientation for a wider waveform view.
  • Touch-drag the handles — they respond to touch the same as mouse.
  • Zoom in on the waveform by pinching (if supported) for precise positioning.
  • Preview before exporting to catch any off cuts.

Format for Mobile Export

Export as MP3 for the broadest compatibility across mobile apps, messaging, and social media. If you're sending to a video editor, WAV is safer. Avoid WebM if you're sharing outside a browser.
